Best Overall

Ever Clean Extra Strength Unscented Review

Ever Clean cat litter.
  • Ingredients: bentonite clay, activated carbon/charcoal
  • Ultra fast clumping
  • Tight clumps ensure less wasted litter
  • Activated charcoal for additional odor control
  • Free of synthetic fragrances
  • Price: $40.22 for 42 lbs = $0.96/lb

What makes Ever Clean’s Extra Strength Unscented litter perfectly suited for the Litter-Robot? This extra-strength formula forms tight, hard clumps that are easy for the Litter-Robot to remove.

The quick-drying formula prevents litter from sticking to the Litter-Robot’s globe liner for easy clean-ups, and the ultra-clumping action also ensures less wasted litter. You’ll likely find that this litter tends to last longer than standard clay litter options, saving you money in the long run.

The formula is also designed for maximum odor control without the use of artificial fragrances. The litter’s high absorbency locks in odors, and activated carbon from coconut shells provides odor control for up to 14 days.

Despite the small granules, Ever Clean produces less dust and tracks less than competitors. It’s a clear winner when it comes to the best cat litter for a version of the Litter-Robot.

Best Premium

Boxiecat BoxiePro Deep Clean Unscented Review

Boxiecat litter.
  • Ingredients: bentonite clay, probiotics
  • Excellent odor control
  • Probiotics work to clean litter box after every use
  • 99.9% dust-free
  • Free of synthetic fragrances
  • Price: $41.99 for 40 lbs = $1.05/lb

Boxiecat’s BoxiPro Deep Clean Unscented litter is the créme de la créme of clay cat litter. The formula works to trap moisture and odor on contact without the use of harmful perfumes, deodorizers, and disinfectants

BoxiePro’s formula is unique in that it uses probiotics. These living beneficial bacteria digest waste and effectively control ammonia odors, giving your Litter-Robot up to 40 days of odor control.

Boxiecat promises that its formula is 99.9% dust-free, and online reviews confirm that this litter offers more dust control than other clay-based competitors. If you or your kitty struggles with asthma or other respiratory issues, this litter is a top pick.

This formula comes with a higher price tag than other options, but it’s worth a try if you’ve struggled with the performance of other litters. It clumps and coats very well, so you should have fewer feces streaks and dirty clumps hanging around the inside of the globe.

Best Budget

Dr. Elsey's Ultra Unscented Review

Dr Elsey's ultra.
  • Ingredients: bentonite clay
  • Fast clumping
  • Low dust
  • Affordable
  • Fragrance-free formula
  • Price: $20.99 for 40 lbs = $0.53/lb

If you’re looking for an effective product without all the extra bells and whistles, try Dr. Elsey’s Ultra Unscented. This litter has become a favorite for those who want an inexpensive clumping clay litter. Its formula contains just one ingredient: bentonite clay.

Dr. Elsey’s Ultra is known for its hard-clumping action and odor control. It quickly absorbs moisture to prevent stuck-on clumps at the bottom of the globe. The clumps will stay intact when the globe spins, so you’ll hopefully have less maintenance clean-up.

The formula uses heavy, medium-grain granules to reduce tracking. The litter is relatively low dust, though less effective than our overall and premium options.

Dr. Elsey’s Ultra is made without perfumes, deodorants, or harmful chemicals. It’s an effective, low-cost option for multi-cat homes.

My Personal Experience With Dr. Elsey’s Litter

I’ve used Dr. Elsey’s in my automatic litter box, and it’s an excellent buy overall. I like that the formula doesn’t contain toxic chemicals that are harmful to myself and my two kitties.

Overall, the performance is good. I have noticed that it forms larger clumps, which means I have to refill the box fairly regularly. But it’s still a great option for the price.

Best Widely Available

Fresh Steps Simply Unscented Review

  • Ingredients: bentonite clay, activated charcoal, borates
  • Contains additional proprietary ingredient blend
  • Activated charcoal for additional odor control
  • Borates for antimicrobial action (may cause eye irritation, cough, and skin rash)
  • Price: $25.32 for 42 lbs = $0.60/lb

If you’re looking for a litter to grab on your way home from work, my pick is Fresh Step’s Simply Unscented cat litter. It’s available at most big-box pet stores, making it a good, widely available option.

As with Dr. Elsey’s, Fresh Step cat litter is one of the brands Litter-Robot specifically recommends for use with the Litter-Robot. It forms tight, small clumps and does not stick to the globe’s interior.

Unlike many other widely available cat litter brands, Fresh Steps Simply Unscented is formulated without added fragrances or dyes. The main ingredients are clay, activated charcoal, and minerals. The clay quickly absorbs moisture, while the activated charcoal neutralizes odors. Fresh Steps promises up to 10 days of odor control.

Fresh Step offers multiple purchasing options, from a 14-pound box to a pack of four 10.5-pound bags. Clay litters are typically much heavier than plant-based options, so I appreciate that Fresh Step sells its litter in packs instead of a single 40-pound bag. This feature makes it much easier to carry and pour.

Our Personal Experience With Fresh Steps Litter

I have used Fresh Step Simply Unscented Clay Cat Litter on many occasions. I like this litter because it has no added fragrances or dyes. I have used this litter with my own cats, as well as when I was fostering kittens. My cats are very fussy and will not use any litter that is scented, so I have to avoid any artificial fragrances. The Fresh Step litter held up well to the needs of both adult cats and kittens. It is very soft and gentle on their paws. This has a low dust formula and clumps up very well without a lot of bits left behind. I also like the activated charcoal the litter has, as it helps with odor control. Fresh Step is usually easy to find, is not super costly, and doesn’t leave behind as big of a mess as many other clay litters.

I used Fresh Step Multi-Cat Clumping litter for years when I had four cats in my home. This brand made a huge difference in eliminating a lot of the ammonia odors that permeated my small townhouse with all of my kitties. I also found that the clumping ability of this litter was superior to many I had tried before. It made it easy to remove the soiled litter while saving unused particles. It was budget-friendly to boot!

Best Non-Clay

Sustainably Yours Large-Grain Review

Sustainably Yours Large-Grain cat litter.
  • Ingredients: cassava and corn
  • Completely plant-based
  • Minimal tracking
  • Soft on paws
  • Fragrance-free formula
  • Price: $20.99 for 10 lbs = $2.10/lb

While clay litter is the ideal option for the Litter-Robot, I know that it also has environmental and health concerns. If you’re looking for a plant-based alternative, check out Sustainably Yours Large-Grain kitty litter.

This product is made from cassava—a tuberous root vegetable—and corn. Cassava, in particular, is known for its super absorbency and water retention, making it a fantastic choice for clumping cat litter.

I like that Sustainably Yours offers a plant-based solution without compromising on performance. This litter does a fantastic job at clumping; the clumps are firm enough not to break apart when the globe spins.

The large-grain formula helps reduce tracking outside the Litter-Robot, though Sustainably Yours also offers a small-grain formula if your cat prefers a certain paw feel.
